Concretions containing barite range in size from less than 1 foot to 4 feet in diameter and are generally elliptical ulm in shape. They are usually not intact when montana found on the surface, but this exposes the core material and enables one to determine if the particular nodule contains barite. A very small percentage of the concretions contain barite crystals.
