[FIGURE 1 OMITTED]GeologyThe land surface features of the area under discussion (fig. 2) consist of the exposed core of the Cedar montana Creek Anticline. This structure marks the southwestern boundary of the Williston Basin, a major structural feature of the northern Great Plains. The anticline is an asymmetric fold with a strike of S. 30[degrees] E. and dips of from 4[degrees] to 40[degrees] southwest and less than 1[degrees] northeast (Clement 1986). The exposed land section of the anticline crops out in an essentially straight line 145 miles long from northwest of Glendive, Montana, southeast to the Buffalo, South Dakota, area (Davis and Hunt 1956).
