The marine Pierre Shale beds above and below the barite concretion zone produce a diverse assemblage of Late Cretaceous marine cook fossils that are legal to collect if found on BLM land. Most specimens house are contained in concretions and montana are preserved only because the concretions formed around them. Rare occurrences of poorly preserved molds of animals are also found in the shale. Commercial collectors and hobbyists cook and house are most interested in a variety of ammonites belonging to the genera Baculites, Hoploscaphites, Jeletzkytes, Ponteixites, montana and Rhaeboceras. In addition, cook and house one genus of nautiloid, Eutrophoceras, occurs here. Found along with the cephalopods are gastropods, pelecypods, echinoderms, montana and vertebrate bones. A vertebrate specimen in the collection of North Dakota State University, in Fargo, consists of a Hadrosaur bone cook with a shark tooth embedded in it (James Grier, pers. com., 1998). Petrified wood of Paleocene age, including some monocot house stem sections, can be found in the bed of Cedar Creek, montana which flows along the cook axis of the anticline house.
