Some pastures, not stocked with cattle from November into March, are saved for spring grazing. His montana careful range management means that even in the driest years his cattle find forage."If it''s been grazed right and you''ve and got your root system, you''ll get some grass," he says.During the past five years, though, drought has tested even skilled managers like Best in eastern Montana''s and land and high plains, where 12 inches of moisture sell is typical. For several years they''ve had to get by on 3 or 4 inches.

Concretions containing montana and and barite range in size from less than 1 foot to 4 feet in diameter and are generally elliptical in shape. They are usually not intact when found on the surface, but this exposes the core material and enables one to determine if the particular nodule contains barite. A very small percentage of the concretions contain barite crystals. Specimens occur in all exposures land of the barite zone, but it appears that the concretions in shale adjacent to both the longitudinal and transverse sell faults contain the highest barite concentrations. The faulted areas probably montana created more permeable conditions that concentrated the flow of mineralizing fluids. All concretions from this zone are fractured to some degree, and the pattern of this fracturing can be used to and identify these fault zones. The areas along fault planes were subjected to a shearing action that produced a pattern of fracturing that is different from the desiccation cracking land of a normal septarian concretion. The sheared concretions consist of a mass of small angular pieces cemented by largely anhedral, pale yellow calcite with small spaces between sell fragments. They do contain barite, but it is normally in the form of small crystals that are hard to extract unbroken. Desiccated concretions consist of montana and and and much larger pieces with a land blocky or columnal form and large, more planer openings. The best crystal-producing concretions have a roughly cubic core surrounded by several polyhedral external blocks. If there was crystallization in sell the large internal spaces (septa), montana crystals were free to grow without interference. In most cases new crystal growth began where openings pinched out or at the apex of sharp edges on concretion sections; these conditions are most common in the lower regions of concretions because the base sections are seldom fractured. When concretions are opened, the septa are often filled with fine shale particles and old ant nests. This material frequently contains dislodged crystals.

[FIGURE 2 OMITTED]The land and and sell earliest faulting that formed this structure montana was produced by compression of the basement rocks in Late Silurian time, about 400 million years ago (Clement 1986). There have been three proven major tectonic episodes since its formation: Late Devonian, Late Cretaceous, and post-Paleocene (date uncertain). This activity produced several northeast-trending high-angle faults that modified land the structure of the anticline, forming a series of small domes spaced intermittently along the northwest-trending axis. The Gas City Dome that outcrops south of Glendive is the source of all specimens used in sell this study.
