Analyses by R. Peter Richards estate and others of crystals taken from approximately 10 square miles of shale outcrop also support this theory. Investigations to date indicate three generations of barite deposition (referred to here as G1, G2, and broadview G3) and two resorption events that produced a subtle but distinctive town variation in crystal habit.

The sheared concretions town consist of a mass of small angular pieces cemented by largely anhedral, pale yellow calcite with small spaces between fragments. They do contain barite, but it is normally in the form mt of small crystals that are hard to extract unbroken. Desiccated real concretions consist of much larger pieces with a blocky or columnal form and large, more planer openings. estate The best crystal-producing concretions have a roughly cubic core surrounded broadview and town by several polyhedral external blocks. If there was crystallization in the large internal spaces (septa), crystals were free to grow without interference. In most cases new crystal growth began where openings pinched out or at the apex of sharp edges on concretion sections; these conditions are most common in the lower mt regions of concretions because the base sections are seldom fractured. When concretions are opened, the septa are often filled with fine shale particles and old ant nests. This material frequently contains dislodged crystals.
